To all who possess a bachelor's degree and intend to come to live and work in their field of expertise in Portugal it is very important to take into account the requirements of recognition of their degree. 

 

In August 2018 new rules took place for the recognition of academic degrees in Portugal. The Decree-Law No. 66/2018 thus standardizes the procedures for the recognition of foreign qualifications, making them more transparent, equitable and simple.

 

The recognition of foreign academic degrees and higher education diplomas is a procedure by which one recognizes the equivalence to Portuguese foreign degrees and diplomas, giving people who are holders of these degrees or diplomas the same rights as the people who obtained them in Portugal.

 

In Portugal there are 3 types of recognition of foreign diplomas:

 

1. Automatic Recognition: this type of recognition is for holders of academic degrees or diplomas conferred by foreign higher education institutions whose level, objectives and nature are identical to those conferred by Portuguese higher education institutions. These educational institutions must be expressly included in a list of countries and courses approved by the Portuguese government.

 

2. Level Recognition: this type of recognition is for holders of academic degrees or diplomas conferred by foreign higher education institutions whose level is identical to the one conferred by Portuguese higher education institutions.

 

3. Specific Recognition: this type of recognition is for holders of academic degrees or diplomas conferred by foreign higher education institutions whose level, duration and programme content are identical to those conferred by Portuguese higher education institutions.

 

Attention: each of the forms of recognition provided for may only be required one single time for the same academic degree or diploma of foreign higher education, and the withdrawal of the request shall not affect the submission of a new application, in the same institution or in a different institution.
